| Update on the U.S. Age Verification Bill in Texas |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| SERVICE UPDATE |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| Hi Thoo Song, |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| You are receiving this email because you have at least one app on Google Play that is available to or used by users in the U.S. |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| What’s happening |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| A few U.S. states, currently Texas, Utah, and Louisiana, have recently passed verification laws requiring app stores to verify users’ ages, obtain parental approval, and provide users’ age information to developers. |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| The first verification law, Texas’s SB 2420, was scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026. However, a Federal District Court has issued a preliminary injunction, preventing enforcement of this law while litigation continues. |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| What this means for you |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| Given this injunction and pending a final outcome, we will be pausing our launch in Texas of previously announced APIs, systems, and tools until further notice and, as such, Google Play will not require any new age verification for Texas users to access the Play Store. Additionally, please note the following: |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| |
undefined|----|
| • |
The Play Age Signals API will not return live responses for Texas users. |
| • |
You will still be able to provide Google Play with age ratings for in-app products, but Google Play will not show these age ratings in the purchase approval flow. |
|----|
| We will keep our FAQs updated with any new information. |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| Other age verification related regulations |
undefined|----|
undefined|----|
| The preliminary injunction in Texas does not impact age verification bills that are slated to go into effect in Utah and Louisiana in May and July 2026 respectively. Google Play will continue supporting developers with solutions to help meet their obligations under these laws using the previously announced APIs, systems, and tools. |
